Vettel wins Monaco GP ahead of Ferrari teammate Raikkonen

"Two very different qualifying results today for Lewis and Valtteri", conceded Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.

His form failed to improve in qualifying, twice wobbling on the track after losing grip on his auto.

The three-time world champion is confident of winning another world title this season, but he faces serious competition from Ferrari duo Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel. It was by no means ideal, but it was good enough and I am very happy with the vehicle.

Raikkonen beat Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel by 0.043s in qualifying at Monaco to take his first pole position since the 2008 French Grand Prix.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain steers his vehicle in front of McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne of Belgium during the Formula One Grand Prix at the Monaco racetrack in Monaco, Sunday, May 28, 2017.

The British driver headed into the weekend six points behind Vettel and aiming to move level with Ayrton Senna's total of 65 pole positions. However, Vettel managed to pass Raikkonen during the pitstop phase snatching the win at the Monaco GP. Mercedes suffered a big blow when 2016 victor Lewis Hamilton, who also won the Spanish GP earlier this month, finished with only the 14th best time after not being able to get any grip on his tyres. It seems Bottas, who had the same setup, was better at that tyre preparation than Hamilton.

At the end of the Monaco GP, Vettel continues to lead the championship standings, while Hamilton sits behind by 25 points over the German whereas Bottas is third with a gap of 54 points.

"It shows we were not bad here and we will just have to figure out why I was not able to be up there with him". "So, we are going to prepare for the race as usual".

"And then we caught Jenson (Button) as well... so why we put me out in traffic when we knew we needed a hard out lap was a pretty obvious mistake". Vettel qualified alongside the 37-year-old Finn on the front row, with Ferrari's pace making them clear favourites for a glamour race the Italian team last won in 2001 with Michael Schumacher. "There are cars in the past that have been handsome to drive and have been a lot easier to set up". "Tomorrow's race will clearly be a case of damage limitation for him".

Verstappen was fastest in Q1 and Hamilton an ominous 10th. He also struggled consistently with his car's tyre set up.

McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne crashed near the end of Q2, meaning a yellow flag ended it about one minute early.

"I came out ahead of Kimi and I was surprised myself, but I'll take it", Vettel said.

After that though the race seriously calmed down to the point that it became a little boring in the mid point with Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz in a battle for a top five place providing most of the excitement. "So with him we're happy - with Lewis, not at all", Lauda told Sky Sports F1.
