The G7 summit ends without USA commitment on Paris agreement

TAORMINA, Italy U.S. President Donald Trump will face pressure at his first summit of major industrialized nations on Friday from allies eager to promote free trade and safeguard global accords on climate change.

London [U.K.], May 27: The G 7 leaders, in their final communique, have said that the summit in Italy has failed to bridge differences over climate change after United States President Donald Trump remained non-committal over the Paris Agreement.

During his campaign preceding the 2016 election, Trump summed up his stance on combating emissions by telling a SC crowd, "I want to use hair spray".

On climate, Trump has long railed against what he says are the economic dangers of the global climate agreement.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was seen giving her fingernails a swift glance as she listened and Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi closed his notes as he sat back in his chair.

In Taormina, Trump said he would not yet make a decision about whether the United States would remain in the Paris Agreement, or withdraw from it. He came here to get smart.

In Brussels, Trump told French leader Emmanuel Macron that he is under "heavy" pressure regarding the climate deal, reports CNN.

"The whole discussion on the topic of climate was very hard, not to say very unsatisfactory", she told reporters, labelling the G-7 deadlock as "six against one". Trump said that he's waiting for the analysis of the steel and aluminum industries that the US Department of Commerce plans to publish in June.

Donald Trump's intentions regarding USA participation in the Paris climate deal remained unknown on Sunday, as one report cited "confidants" saying the president had made up his mind to pull out while a senior cabinet minister said he was "quite certain the president is wide open on this issue".

The U.S. had crippled the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, the predecessor to the Paris Agreement, when it refused to ratify it.

The White House did not immediately respond to media requests for comment. Only five of NATO's 28 members meet the target: Britain, Estonia, debt-laden Greece, Poland and the United States, which spends more on defense than all the other allies combined.

The president early Saturday said he will make his decision about the deal next week.

Despite Trump's refusal to disclose where he stands on the treaty, the other G7 nations reaffirmed their strong commitment to the Paris accord, according to a communique released at the conclusion of the summit.

But accusations from US intelligence agencies that Russia intervened in the USA election to help Trump and investigations into his campaign's contacts with Russian officials have hung over his four-month-old presidency and prevented him from getting too close to Moscow.
