Further disruption for flights at Heathrow

British Airways planes are parked at Heathrow Airport during a 48hr cabin crew strike in London

In Singapore, one BA flight to London was affected and delayed for more than six hours, the airline said yesterday.

BA said it would try to get affected customers onto the next available flight although the re-booking process was being hindered by the system problems.

It left long delays even when flights could take off, with many passengers still waiting this afternoon, some slumped on baggage trolleys or on yoga mats.

Passengers faced hours-long lines to check in, reclaim lost luggage or rebook flights at Terminal 5, BA's hub at Heathrow. "Many of you have been stuck in long queues while you waited for information", Cruz said in a video statement on Sunday.

British Airways canceled all flights from London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports on Saturday as a global IT failure upended the travel plans of tens of thousands of people on a busy United Kingdom holiday weekend.

"We expect some further disruption today, but we are aiming to operate the majority of services from Heathrow and a near normal schedule at Gatwick".

Grainne Hartnett (26) had arrived in Heathrow from Dublin on Saturday morning to board a connecting flight to Vancouver with British Airways (BA).

The failure, caused by a power supply problem, disrupted BA's flight operations worldwide and also hit its call centers and website, said Alex Cruz, the chairman and chief executive of BA, part of Europe's largest airline group IAG.

Heathrow Airport also confirmed the issue in a statement posted on Twitter. Thousands of bags remain at Heathrow Airport, yet BA has advised passengers not to return to collect them as they will instead be couriered to customers.

Passenger Roshni Burt, who was flying from Heathrow to Bahrain with her young son, said there was no news about when her flight would depart.

Customers displaced by flight cancellations will be able to claim up to £200 a day for a room (based on two people sharing), £50 for transport between the hotel and the airport and £25 a day per adult for meals and refreshments.

Some passengers were curled up under blankets on the floor or sleeping slumped on luggage trolleys. "BA can't get away with refunding passengers and hoping that's the end of the matter - they are obliged to provide compensation under Regulation 261/2004 and we're preparing for a busy week helping passengers recover that compensation".

"We helped her up and she said 'I'm just so exhausted, '" said Page, whose luggage didn't arrive in Texas with him.

Thousands of British Airways passengers could be entitled to compensation after a global IT failure caused mass disruption over the weekend, which was a bank holiday in the UK.

The airline said its terminals at Heathrow and Gatwick became "extremely congested" due to the computer problems. On Saturday, May 27, British Airways suffered a major IT outage causing widespread confusion in addition to delays and queues for passengers around the world.
