National Football League cuts OT from 15 minutes to 10, citing player safety

If any of these can make their way into the NFL this season it will be worth the price for however you're consuming the league. Instead, teams will go straight from 90 to 53 players following the final preseason game.

Team will now cut their roster from 90 players to 53 days before the regular season.

Another notable rule change is overtime being shortened from a 15-minute period down to a 10-minute period, according to Tom Pelissero of USA TODAY Sports.

Research suggests the number of games that will go into overtime and end up tied will climb slightly.

The rule change could result in more ties, of which there were two last season. They can return to games eight weeks after being put on injured reserve.

If for some reason the Minnesota Vikings and one of their opponents next season are locked in a tie at the end of regulation, now each team will only have a 10-minute overtime period to try and win the game.

"We are relaxing our rules on celebrations to allow players more room to have fun after they make big plays", Goodell said. That will allow for longer review on players through the entirety of a team's four preseason games.

Last season National Football League players who celebrated touchdowns by using the ball as a prop or performing a snow angel would have been penalised.

Former New Orleans Saints receiver Joe Horn helped change the touchdown rules when, in 2003, he scored and ran toward the goal post where he'd hidden a cell phone.

Also a new rule that will take effect this year is the elimination of the first round of roster cuts.

The IR change is also very welcome, in my mind. Perhaps it's hard to celebrate excessively when you're losing so frequently.

The 75-player requirement has been dropped, which likely will mean no starter or top-of-the-line reserve will seeing playing time in the final preseason game, but players vying for spots on practice squads throughout the league will get a longer look than in the past.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, pictured on SiriusXM NFL Radio during the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft at Philadelphia Museum of Art on April 27, 2017 in Philadelphia, announced rules changes for player celebrations.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke said he welcomed the decision to delay awarding the Super Bowl to Los Angeles by a year.

LA will now host the Super Bowl in 2022.
