Manchester bombing - Off-duty female police officer killed in attack

UK terror threat level remains 'critical' says May

The man suspected of carrying out Britain's worst terror attack since more than a decade has been named as 22-year old Salman Ramadan Abedi.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the suicide bomb attack.

The Manchester attack was the deadliest in Britain since July 2005, when four British Muslim suicide bombers killed 52 people in coordinated attacks on London's transport network.

"We don't believe in killing innocents".

His remarks go a step further than previous statements, in which officials said they were trying to learn whether the attacker had the support of a larger group.

The Abedi family, however, is close to the family of al-Qaida veteran Abu Anas al-Libi, who was snatched by USA special forces off a Tripoli street in 2013, then died in US custody in 2015.

Six of the victims are known to be eight-year-old Saffie Roussos, Olivia Campbell, 15, Kelly Brewster, 32, Martyn Hett, John Atkinson, 28, and Georgina Callander - thought to be 18. An unnamed police officer is also confirmed dead.

Her husband was critically injured in the attack and is now in hospital.

Officials said all those hospitalised had been identified.

"They've been the sort of traumatic injuries that you would expect in terms of the type of device used, the proximity to the people who were injured".

"We are now treating 64 individuals. of those, approximately 20 are receiving critical care, that means very urgent care", Jon Rouse, chief officer for health and social care services in the Greater Manchester area, told Sky News.

The senior Abedi fled Tripoli in 1993 after Moammar Gadhafi's security authorities issued an arrest warrant for him and eventually sought political asylum in Britain.

The suspected bomber grew up in Manchester's southern suburbs and once attended Salford University there.

But police say they're still working to determine whether Abedi may had help in planning the bombing. However Rudd stopped short of revealing any further information.

Ms Rudd told the BBC Abedi had recently returned from Libya, while French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said British investigators had told French authorities Abedi had probably travelled to Syria as well.

A leading theory is that the attacker may have received specialist training overseas or that there is a technician in the United Kingdom who constructed the bomb, the Western official said.

On Tuesday evening (May 23), The British government, wary of additional possible attacks, raised the national terror threat level to "critical".

MANCHESTER, England (AP) - British security forces raided a building Wednesday in central Manchester as they investigated "a network" of people allegedly behind the city's concert bombing.

American news outlets confirmed that the information on the attack's perpetrator, Salman Abedi, had been passed to them by USA officials.

The Home Secretary suggests the "operational integrity" of the investigation was at risk.

But British ministers and security chiefs have been dismayed by leaks in the U.S. media which made public details about the British investigation.
