Should New York politician Anthony Weiner get prison time for sexting teen?

New York. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio held a clear lead Tuesday night in New York City's mayoral Democratic primary as pol

This afternoon a court official confirmed that Abedin filed for divorce after seven years of marriage.

Prosecutors will seek a sentence of 21 to 27 months in prison for Weiner, who wept as he read his four-paragraph statement.

The FBI began investigating Weiner in September after the 15-year-old North Carolina girl told a tabloid news site, the Daily Mail, that she and the disgraced former politician had exchanged lewd messages for several months.

NBC News reports that Weiner sent pornographic videos to the girl and asked her to reciprocate with nudes and masturbation videos.

Weiner left Congress in June 2011 when sexually-charged, sometimes explicit, texts with women other than his wife first emerged.

Weiner and Abedin have been estranged since last summer, when new accusations came to light that he sent photos and messages to another woman.

ABC News reported that the former congressman agreed to surrender his iPhone and will register as a sex offender.

"I knew that was morally wrong", Weiner said, breaking down in tears.

"He said, 'I have a sickness, but I don't have an excuse, ' which is like saying, 'It's not my fault, but I accept responsibility, '" Timpf said. The ultimate sentence would be determined by a judge.

Luckily for Weiner, the teen didn't press charges because the texting was consensual.

Weiner's estranged wife Huma Abedin filed for divorce from him on Friday, according to NY media. Sentencing is scheduled for September 2017.

FBI Assistant Director in Charge William F Sweeney Jr added: "We work every day in the FBI and law enforcement to stop adults from preying on vulnerable children".

The case came to the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation last year when the 15-year-old girl in North Carolina told the Daily Mail about her online communications with Weiner.

Weiner was already in federal custody ahead of the hearing. He accepted a plea deal following an FBI investigation. Although Comey described himself as "mildly nauseous" at the idea, many have said his announcement was at least partially to blame for Clinton losing the presidency to Donald Trump.

Weiner ended up in fifth place in the mayoral race, far behind the victor, current New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio.

Weiner also claimed at the time that he was "likely" the subject of a hoax.
