Senate Judiciary leaders invite Comey to testify

Democratic Senator Joe Manchin said Rosenstein would be questioned about a letter he wrote accusing Comey of missteps as Federal Bureau of Investigation director, including his handling of an election-year probe into Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. The White House initially said that letter prompted Trump to fire Comey, but Trump later said he had already chose to dismiss him and was thinking of "this Russia thing."The Russia matter has consumed Washington and overshadowed Republican legislative priorities including a planned healthcare overhaul and sweeping tax cuts". Democrats have challenged Rosenstein's impartiality in the Russian Federation probe because he wrote a memorandum initially used as the rationale for Comey's firing.

"As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity", Trump said in a statement.

Contending that "it is obvious to the American people that the Russia-Trump investigation requires a special counsel", U.S. Sen. "He is respected, he is talented and he has the knowledge and ability to do the right thing".

In naming Robert Mueller, the deputy attorney general said it was in the public interest to have an outsider. Whatever the reason, Rosenstein would have to inform Mueller in writing.

A report says House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said a year ago that he thought Putin was paying the Republican presidential candidate, a remark McCarthy's spokesman calls "a failed attempt at humor". "I urge Mr. Mueller to follow the facts wherever they may lead-with integrity and independence".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in March he would recuse himself from any investigations related to the 2016 presidential campaigns. There have never been such grave allegations of electoral meddling by a foreign power in a USA presidential election. Sen. Chris Murphy (D) of CT called the decision "the right move." .

Senators who attended the closed-door meeting said Mr Rosenstein said he knew on Monday, May 8th, that Mr Trump was planning to fire Mr Comey before he wrote the memo that was initially used by the White House to justify the decision.

After news broke of Mueller's appointment, Bharara tweeted: "Reminder: Mueller was FBI Director when he & then-DAG James Comey together intervened at Ashcroft's bedside in 2004 & threatened to resign". But Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Comey should still appear before congressional committees that have invited him to testify.Top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi said an independent commission to investigate the Russian Federation matter was still needed to guard against White House interference. "An independent special prosecutor is vital to that imperative".

Peter Zeidenberg, who has worked for a past special counsel, called Mueller an "inspired choice" because he comes to the job with automatic credibility among both parties.

Flynn and other Trump campaign advisers were in contact with Russian officials and others with Kremlin ties in at least 18 calls and emails during the last seven months of the presidential race, Reuters reported on Thursday. House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wis. takes questions from reporters at the Republican National Committee Headquarters in Washington, Wednesday, May 17, 2017. That is what we've been doing here in the House.

In his new role, Mueller answers to, and in theory could be fired by, Rosenstein, but in practice a special counsel is not subject to daily supervision by any Justice Department official.

Investigations already underway in the Senate Intelligence Committee and House Intelligence Committee and other panels will progress. "It is my hope that these investigations will now move expeditiously".

The FBI's investigation will continue.

Rep. John Conyers, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee said the appointment was "certainly appropriate."

. The White House counsel's office was alerted only after the order appointing Mueller was signed. The Deputy Attorney General's decision reflects the seriousness of the allegations against President Trump and his associates-and the degree to which the public had lost confidence in the political leadership of the Trump Administration on this matter.

"In my capacity as acting attorney general I determined that it is in the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appoint a special counsel to assume responsibility for this matter, " Rosenstein said in a statement. I am disappointed that Congress has taken precious few meaningful actions to investigate President Trump's decision to fire Director Comey, the President's admission that he did so because he did not like the Russian Federation investigation, and reports that Trump tried to waive Director Comey off of the investigation altogether.

Trump says In a written statement that he looks forward to "this matter concluding quickly".
