U.S. and European Union reject in-flight laptop ban

US and Europe to hold fresh talks to broaden laptop ban on flights

Homeland Security previously said the electronics ban involving Middle Eastern airports was put in place because USA officials were "concerned about terrorists' ongoing interest in targeting commercial aviation". It said the ban had a direct impact on demand for air travel into the US and it faced rising costs from introducing complimentary laptop loans to some passengers.

The International Air Transport Association said the ban would cost $1.1 billion in lost productivity and added travel time.

As many as 65million people a year fly between Europe and North America on nearly 400 daily flights, with many of them being business travellers who rely on devices to work during the long-haul flights.

Russian Federation has not adopted a European laptop flight ban, despite evidently having being briefed by the U.S. pres. There is more than 400 daily flights on routes between Europe and North America.

It came from Alexandre de Juniac, director general and CEO of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and was sent to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and EC Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc. It also said increasing the number of lithium battery-powered devices in the cargo hold could affect safety.

US anti-terrorism officials met for four hours Wednesday in Brussels with their European counterparts who are resisting a proposed expansion of a laptop ban in airline passenger cabins.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is "well aware" of views from airlines, airports, other nations and other stakeholders, Lapan said.

The policy means that no laptops, tablets, e-readers, cameras, portable DVD players or other personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone or smart phone are allowed in carry-on baggage for passengers on those flights. According to some experts, a bomb in the cabin would be easier to make compared in the cargo.

The airline industry had feared the widening of the laptop ban would mean longer lines at security, significant delays and confusion at boarding gates during the busy summer period.

"While the Secretary has not made a final decision on expanding the restriction on large electronic devices in aircraft cabins to additional last points of departure, it is still under consideration", the tweet said.

The European Commission (EC) and the United States have pushed back against moves for a wider ban on laptops on aircraft but talks on the subject will continue in Washington next week.

An industry-backed group, the Airline Passenger Experience Association, said the USA government should consider alternatives.

The European Union has demanded urgent talks with the United States over a possible extension to some European countries of a USA ban on airline passengers taking laptops into cabins, saying any security threats faced are common.

Deploying extra staff would take time because they would need to be trained and get security clearance. It said that the risk arising from storing PEDs in the hold where they may catch fire without being noticed "could be greater than the security risk of having them in the cabin'".
