Chelsea Manning released after 7 years in military prison

Chelsea Manning, the transgender army private jailed for one of the largest leaks of classified documents in US history, was released from prison today, a US Army spokeswoman tells AFP.

An Army spokesperson confirms that Chelsea Manning, born Bradley Manning, left Fort Leavenworth military prison in Kansas Wednesday morning. Gregory T. Angelo, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, an organization advocating for LGBT conservatives, said he finds it "perplexing" that Manning would be idolized.

Her American Civil Liberties Union lawyer, Chase Strangio, said "it is incredible to witness" Manning free.

Now 29, Manning said at the time she hoped to encourage debate about America's wars, but the leaked files stretched far beyond the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, with diplomatic cables embarrassing senior officials on almost every continent. During her sentence, Manning attempted suicide twice.

That Manning will speak out publicly upon her release seems a given.

Critics said her leaks threatened the lives of us military members. She infamously released 700,000 government files to WikiLeaks that contained classified information about the United States military and diplomatic activities.

Ms Manning served seven years of her 35-year sentence, which was commuted by Barack Obama as one of his final acts as President.

"I appreciate the wonderful support that I have received from so many people across the world over these past years", Manning said in a statement to ABC News before her release.

Chelsea Manning, the whistleblower who leaked documents to WikiLeaks on USA wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, was released from military prison on Wednesday.

Last week, Manning tweeted her excitement about her impending release: "Freedom was only a dream, and hard to imagine".

Ms Manning said she wanted to expose the USA military's alleged disregard of the effects of war on civilians and chose to release information that she believed would not harm the US.

"I feel very comfortable that justice has been served", said President Obama about his partial commutation of Manning's sentence.

After the 2013 sentencing, the ex-intelligence agent changed her name to Chelsea Manning and became a transgender woman.

When she asks if that is a factor in Manning's treatment, Assange replies: "They have tried to use that against him... they are using that to diminish him as a human being".

Only when appeals are exhausted - and that might include petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court - can military command "approve what I suspect will be a dishonorable discharge", Mayer said.

Manning's attorneys disclosed in September that she had been approved for gender reassignment surgery. Under the chat name bradass87, she wrote, "i want people to see the truth... regardless of who they are... because without information, you can not make informed decisions as a public". "She wouldn't be charged again for the same offenses, but if she committed a new crime, the military would still have jurisdiction over her".
