BC Greens face stickhandling act in deciding which party it would back

BC Liberal Leader Christy Clark handily won her West Kelowna riding over the NDP's Shelly Cook with 60% of the vote during Tuesday's BC Election.

"I think they want us to find ways to do things differently", Clark told reporters.

"We're starting negotiations tomorrow", said Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver, calling the election "a historic day for British Columbia".

But Clark had a different interpretation, saying she reads the results as a plea to the major parties to work together more effectively.

British Columbians will continue to await a final vote count that will determine what the government will look like moving forward.

This election was Clark's second as premier.

Whoever the Greens potentially choose to side with, Weaver said one issue is non-negotiable: ridding provincial politics of corporate and union donations.

While students that took part in the mock vote are not of legal voting age, it still shows how they would like to be represented provincially. The Greens now hold the balance of power in the 87-seat legislature.

"In the days ahead there will be plenty of discussions taking place between all parties. Now is the time for all Greens across the country to celebrate".

And while Weaver said during the campaign that Horgan exploded in anger during some of their conversations, Horgan said that he does not remember such outbursts.

That vote will be destined for a recount, and could be vulnerable to absentee ballots that won't be counted for almost two weeks, between May 22 and 24. While the final count won't be concluded until May 22, 2017, voter turnout is estimated at around 57 per cent, up from 55 per cent in 2013.

The NDP focused its campaign on the seat-rich Lower Mainland. NDP's Mitzi Dean has taken the lead with the Liberal and Green candidate splitting the remaining votes. Instead, he will be joined by Mr. Olsen, a former municipal councillor who worked to derail an LNG project near Victoria and was also an intervenor in the National Energy Board hearings for the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion. Clark endorsed the project after the federal government's approval, but Horgan has promised to use "every tool in the toolbox" to stop it.

The party lost in the northern riding of Skeena, which the Liberals haven't picked up since 2001, but picked up seats across Metro Vancouver, knocking off four cabinet ministers, including Attorney General Suzanne Anton, TransLink Minister Peter Fassbender, and Naomi Yamamoto in North Vancouver-Lonsdale - a riding that hasn't gone orange since 1991, when the vote was split on the right.

There is now a clear urban-rural divide across the province electoral slate, according to B.C. pollsters.

The loss of its majority is a big blow for the Liberals, which had campaigned on a track record and promises of strong economic growth and job creation. When the election was called, the Liberals had 47 seats, the New Democrats 35, and there were three Independents, including Weaver. That's a question we still don't know the answer to, despite polls having closed across Canada's western-most province over three hours ago, because the results have been incredibly close.

After months of pressure, the Liberals committed to convening a panel to review political fundraising.
