China's C919 airliner gets set to challenge Airbus and Boeing

The plane's maker is the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Comac, a government-owned firm founded in 2008 and tasked with the strategic goal of breaking the duopoly held by Airbus and Boeing.

According to Reuters.com, the C919 passed over the Yangtze River delta during its long-awaited maiden flight and conducted several midair tests before landing successfully at Shanghai Pudong International Airport in front of thousands of cheering dignitaries, aviation workers and enthusiasts. So far, Comac has received orders for 570 of the new airliners from 23 customers, a lot of them from Chinese airlines and leasing companies.

The successful test flight of the C919 comes only nine days after the country debuted its first homegrown aircraft carrier in Dalian, Liaoning province, showing the world its manufacturing prowess, development of advanced technology and national ambition to regain past glory.

The C919 carries 170 passengers and has a range of more than 5,500 kilometers, meaning it will match up against the Boeing 737 and Airbus A20 in a fast-growing aviation market.

COMAC has received 570 orders from 23 foreign and domestic customers, according to the Chinese media.

Comac has applied for Type Certification for the C919 from both the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the European Aviation Safety Agency.

In a historic moment for Chinese aviation, China's first domestically built large passenger plane took to the sky for the first time earlier this afternoon.

Suppose domestic jets can win 50 percent of the China market, that would represent a huge potential for the country's aircraft industry.

The C919 incorporated parts from over 30 global suppliers such as Honeywell International Inc.

China is one of the biggest aviation markets, but relies on foreign-made aircraft and has long sought to enter the lucrative global jet market, which is estimated to be worth $2 trillion over the next 20 years.

The narrow-body jet, will take on Boeing's 737 and the Airbus A320. Security personnel gesture as a Chinese C919 passenger jet sits on the tarmac before its scheduled first flight at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai, Friday, May 5, 2017. "The C919's debut flight is a complete success", said Cai Jun, captain of the flight. The jet landed one hour and 19 minutes later after a seemingly uneventful first trial. Mohshin said much of China's aircraft technology started from Russian Federation, and the Tianjin factory has since given China's supply chain vital experience.

"Ultimately, making an entire airplane from Chinese manufactured components is probably half a century away", said George Ferguson, senior aerospace analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, which conducts economic and industry analysis.
