2 gang rapes show India struggling on women's safety

The SHO of Women Police Station in Rohtak, Inspector Garima, on Tuesday said they received the letter on 11 May, in which the girl, who claimed to be around 17-year-old, has alleged that she was gang-raped in March this year.

The stepfather, who is also the child's paternal uncle, was arrested and is now in jail, according to police, who added that the abuse had been going on for years.

The doctors' panel from five departments of the institute said they found the girl was 20 weeks pregnant and according to norms under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, abortion is not allowed after five months.

The request for an abortion was moved to a local district court Tuesday because the girl was more than 20 weeks' pregnant.

The Indian Express said the victim's mother wanted the accused to be set free as he had apologised and that she had other children to take care of. Later, the victim revealed that she was sexually abused by her stepfather regularly while her mother was away for work.

A minor girl from Rohtak has sent a letter to the police alleging rape and blackmail by two persons at gun-point.

Police said there were no official records of the child's birth date.

"The stepfather has been arrested and is in jail".

In a particularly brutal case, a postmortem examination found the woman had been raped with sharp objects.

Police said the men took turns raping the woman, using an iron rod to violate her as the bus drove around the city for nearly an hour. Her head had been smashed.
