Trump taps Callista Gingrich to be ambassador to the Vatican

Callista Gingrich to be ambassador to Vatican

Trump is set to visit Rome where he will meet with Pope Francis on May 24, and the White House is hoping the president will formally announce his decision beforehand.

"What they ought to do is get out of all this junk, they ought to focus on the big goals, they ought to report to the nation on the big goals, ignore all these reporters, close down the press room, send the reporters off [to Starbucks]", Gingrich said on Fox News's Hannity.

The president plans to nominate Callista Gingrich as Ambassador to the Vatican, CNN reports. In a 2011 interview Gingrich told the Christian Broadcasting Network that she has "always been a very spiritual person". After his 1999 divorce, the two married the following year and he became a Catholic in 2009, saying Callista, a lifelong Catholic, was instrumental in making that choice. The two began an affair that Callista later said she regrets, according to Heavy.com. Prior to that, she was a congressional aide in the House of Representatives. However, Newt denied the allegations.

Gingrich was anxious that a move to Europe would prevent her husband, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, from defending the president on television, according to Axios.

Over recent months, Ms. Gingrich and her husband grew increasingly frustrated with the slow pace of the vetting process, and Ms. Gingrich even threatened to take her name out of the running, according to one of the people. Former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pennsylvania, was also considered for the role, the newspaper reported.

A formal announcement of Gingrich's nomination is likely to come this week, the White House official told The Post.
