Coroner: Teen had healthy heart before caffeine

NBC News reports that the death of a 16-year-old student last month in SC has officially been deemed a caffeine overdose.

Watts says Cripe drank a large Mountain Dew, a latte from McDonald's and an energy drink in the two hours before his heart fell out of rhythm at Spring Hill High School near Chapin on April 26.

Too much caffeine caused the death of a 16-year-old high school student from SC who collapsed during class last month, according to the county coroner.

16-year-old Davis Allen Cripe collapsed in a classroom in his high school outside Columbia, South Carolina last month, and died in an emergency room.

Sean Cripe, Davis' father, told WLTX-TV his son did not drink alcohol or use drugs, and warned other parents about allowing their children to drink high-caffeinated energy drinks.

A caffeine overdose has been ruled the cause of death of a SC teenager last month, a state coroner reported on Monday.

Coroner Watts echoed Sean Cripe's call for greater care when it comes to the consumption of high-caffeine products.

"You know, a cup of coffee, a can of soda, isn't going to cause this sort of thing", said Amy Durso, MD, deputy chief pathologist for Richland County.

Davis' autopsy showed no undiagnosed heart conditions and that Davis was healthy and had no conditions that could have triggered by the caffeine intake.

The daily recommended limit for a healthy adult is 400mg of caffeine a day. "I'm telling my friends and family don't drink them".

"It wasn't a auto crash that took his life", he said of his son. "Parents, please, talk to your kids about the dangers of these energy drinks". "It's the amount and also the time frame in which these caffeinated beverages are consumed that can put you at risk". A large McDonald's latte reportedly contains approximately 178 mg of caffeine and energy drinks range from 72 to 111 mg of caffeine per serving.
