IS leader in Afghanistan was killed in April raid

Abdul Hasib, the Islamic State's top leader for Afghanistan and Pakistan, was killed last month in a joint Afghan-U.S. operation, the U.S. military said on Sunday, less than a year after the group's previous leader was also killed.

As part of a growing effort against the terror group, the Afghan Air Force has also recently geared strikes toward ISIS hideouts in Nazyan and Achin districts.

Defeating the group remains one of the top USA priorities in Afghanistan, and last month the United States dropped its largest non-nuclear device on a network of caves and tunnels used by ISIS in Nangarhar, killing 94 fighters, including four commanders.

A US military spokesman in Kabul, Navy Capt. William Salvin, estimated that the ISIS-K force has now been reduced from more than 2,500 fighters at its peak in 2015 to less than 600, mostly confined to several adjacent districts in Nangahar.

Afghan and USA officials said Hasib masterminded the March 8 attack against Kabul National Military Hospital, which killed around 50 people, including doctors.

The U.S. military command in Afghanistan launched an offensive against ISIS-K in March, and has made it their mission to rid ISIS from the country within the year.

The government statement came after Pentagon announced on Sunday night that a military raid last month killed Abdul Haseeb Logari, the IS chief in Nangarhar.

At least 35 militants and several high-ranking commanders were killed in the raid, which involved 50 US Army Rangers and 40 Afghan troops.

This is the second ISIS-K emir we have killed in nine months, along with dozens of their leaders and hundreds of their fighters.

"According to President Ghani's office, "[Hasib] was responsible for ordering the attack on the 400-bed hospital in Kabul, kidnapped girls and beheaded elders in front of their families".

"For more than two years, ISIS-K has waged a barbaric campaign of death, torture and violence against the Afghan people, especially those in southern Nangarhar, noted General Nicholson".

"I applaud the tremendous skill and courage shown by our Afghan partners", Gen Nicholson said.

A radio station airing Islamic State content was destroyed during an operation in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, local media reported.

Two U.S Army Rangers were however killed in the same raid by what officials believe was friendly fire. "Any ISIS member that comes to Afghanistan will meet the same fate", Nicholson said.

The first, Hafiz Saeed, was killed in a United States airstrike also in Nangarhar province in July previous year.
