Michigan Supreme Court Justice nominated for federal position

A senior White House official told The New York Times that Trump would be announcing his conservative nominees on a regular basis, with the first round being made this week.

Larsen, 48, is a former University of MI law professor who clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the conservative jurist who died in 2016.

Amul R. Thapar, a U.S. District Court judge in Kentucky, is Trump's only nominee so far to the lower federal courts.

In addition to the appellate nominees noted above, Trump is poised to nominate Damien Schiff of the Pacific Legal Foundation to the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.

Vice President Mike Pence and White House counsel Don McGahn, arrive in the Capitol on the day the Senate voted to confirm Neil Gorsuch as the next Supreme Court justice, April 7, 2017.

Two of the appeals court nominees set to be announced on Monday also were on that list: Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joan Larsen, who will also be nominated for the Sixth Circuit, and Minnesota Supreme Court Justice David Stras, who will be nominated for the Eighth Circuit.

President Donald Trump surprised some of his critics (including me) by sticking to his pledge to nominate a highly qualified Supreme Court justice from the list he circulated prior to the election. She graduated first in her class from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, served in President George W. Bush's Justice Department and taught at the University of Michigan Law School.

Dabney Friedrich, a former member of the US Sentencing Commission, for the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

The Free Press reported Saturday that Snyder is expected to appoint Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Kurtis Wilder to replace Young.

Numerous appellate nominees to be announced Monday have deep ties to the conservative Federalist Society.
