Trump to meet Australian PM on 1st presidential trip to NYC

Trump, a son of outer-borough Queens who literally put his name on the Manhattan skyline, arrives in NY for the first time as president for a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. "A lot of pieces [have been] put in place", Commissioner James O'Neill said.

About 1,000 NYPD officers are assigned to Trump's first homecoming since the native New Yorker's inauguration on January 20, according to an NYPD official.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull isn't the only person who'll be turning out to greet Donald Trump in the USA president's home town.

One person familiar with the agenda said the leaders would focus on North Korea, Iraq and Syria, and also economic issues, including infrastructure, a key plank of Mr Trump's domestic agenda.

In the first chapter of his memoir, "The Art of the Deal", Trump described a typical day in Trump Tower-phone calls and meetings with real-estate executives, celebrities and Wall Street traders in his office, followed by time with his children in his palatial residence. The conversation made headlines around the world and Trump later tweeted about the "dumb deal".

After his speech on the Intrepid, the President is expected to spend his weekend at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, therefore skipping a visit to his "masterpiece", Trump Towers.

"President Trump has made it clear we will honour the agreement, but it doesn't mean we admire the agreement", said Pence.

"My meeting with President Trump will provide an opportunity to reaffirm our alliance and the United States' engagement with the Asia Pacific", Mr Turnbull said in a statement.

US and Australian warships and fighter planes fought the Japanese from May 4-8, 1942, with the Japanese navy being forced back for the first time in World War II.

The Thursday meeting will follow a speech by Trump aboard the USS Intrepid to anniversary of the Coral Sea battle, when USA and Australian troops fought alongside each other against the Japanese in World War II.

Thursday's meeting comes after Mike Pence, the United States vice-president, travelled to Australia to smooth out some of the wrinkles in what is one of America's most important alliances.

The upscale hotel on Fifth Avenue is a block away from Trump Tower, where police barricades have been set up to control scores of protesters who are expected to demonstrate.

The city says it costs $308,000 (R4,127,200) a day when the president comes to town, and $127,000 to $146,000 to protect his family. "We have to be fluid, flexible".

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has been a vocal critic, lambasting Trump again Monday for his pledge to cut off federal funding to so called "sanctuary cities", that don't aid the immigration authorities in deportation efforts.

"I hate to see the New Yorkers with streets closed", he said.
