Police say Chicago officers shot and wounded were targeted

Anthony Guglielmi said the officers were shot from a vehicle.

It is not believed that their injuries were life threatening.

Both officers were taken to a nearby hospital.

The vehicle's interior was found in disarray on Saturday morning when officers went to Superintendent Eddie Johnson's Bridgeport home to pick him up.

Testifying at the hearing, Chief Barbara West of the Police Department's Bureau of Organizational Development said the department "is reviewing the support services now available through the employee assistance program to ensure they are appropriate to assist officers exposed to trauma, those who are involved in shootings, domestic violence and other stressors that have an impact on officer health and wellness".

Investigators on Wednesday had questioned three people of interest and had a female in custody who may have driven one of the vehicles suspected to belong to the offenders. "Right now, there's an extensive manhunt underway for the individuals responsible and we will get them". Supt. Johnson says, "You know, so we're thankful that they both appear to be OK at this point but we have to do something about this gun violence in this city". He stated that if the suspects did not care about firing upon police officers, they also would have no problem "firing at other citizens of this great city". Two officers arrived with a box of coffee and a large bag.

Such was the case late on Tuesday when two Chicago Police officers investigating a gang-related shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood came under fire while they were sitting in an unmarked tactical van.

The Back of the Yards neighborhood has seen some improvements with redevelopments.

Police said at the time this was the only area of the city where rifles styled after AR-15s and AK-47s were regularly used, a menacing new development in the gang fights. The officers were able to return fire, but it's unclear if they hit anyone. At least 46 people were shot in those attacks, 13 fatally. The second was shot in the arm and hip.

"They weren't messing around", she said.

The shooting happened near 43rd and Ashland. Guglielmi said ballistics and the trace on the assault rifle have been expedited.
