He will get a second chance this year as co-leaders South Africa face Cape Verde (twice), Burkina Faso and Senegal with a place at the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation going to the group winners.

Baxter, the former coach of England Under-19s and Finland, replaced Shakes Mashaba.

Safa then turned to Baxter late last month, with SuperSport releasing a statement on March 30 to confirm the club was allowing the coach to speak to the association about the unoccupied Bafana post.

Stuart Baxter has been appointed head coach of South Africa, ending a long search that began when his predecessor was sacked previous year for misconduct.

This will be Baxter's second stint as the Bafana Bafana coach after managing the team between 2004 and 2005.

Baxter, who has previously coached South African giants Kaizer Chiefs, will also be given time away from club duties to prepare Bafana Bafana for their opening 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Nigeria on the weekend of 9-11 June.

SAFA first suspended and then sacked former coach Ephraim Mashaba in November previous year after a public outburst aimed at the organisation's president, Danny Jordaan, following a 2-1 World Cup qualifier victory over Senegal.

Baxter is now in charge of Pretoria outfit Supersport United.

SuperSport United manager, Stuart Baxter, is believed to be the coach SAFA has been in talks with, for a possible return to the Bafana Bafana job. That qualifier is just two weeks after his last scheduled league game with SuperSport. "He has done a great job in getting us to the competitive level we expect as a Club, however, we also understand that Stuart would like to have a final go at competing at a FIFA World Cup and that would be a fantastic achievement for the country as a whole", said Matthews.
