People's Climate March Takes Over Washington D.C.

Marchers protest against climate policies on Trump’s 100th day in office

Compared to last weekend's March for Science, today's "People's Climate March" was more explicitly anti-Trump, more intersectional, and more social justice oriented.

Thousands of people across the US are marching on President Donald Trump's hundredth day in office to demand action on climate change. The march is scheduled to go from the Capitol to the Washington Monument by way of the White House.

Mother Jones has three reporters on the scene in DC.

Sarpolis says he hopes to connect people on the buses to opportunities for activism beyond the march.

The march comes on the symbolic 100th day in office for President Trump, who denies climate change and has called it a Chinese "hoax".

On what could be a record-hot day, tens of thousands of demonstrators are expected to assemble in Washington on Saturday.

"There's a lot of mutual energy that's reinforcing each other, getting people excited about these sort of common issues and common ways of protesting", Ley said.

During the week of the march itself, the Trump administration has taken steps that is sure to enrage activists.

"President Trump's First 100 Days plan is a clear sign that he will fast-track profits for corporations before he invests in the needs of the American people".

"We're using this as a tactic to advance the strategy of building enough power to win on climate over the course of the long haul", said Paul Getsos, national coordinator for the Peoples Climate Movement. "One of the goals of this week is to get people energized and excited and in relationships so they are going back to their community to take on fights and campaigns around climate and climate justice". "Part of it is a misconception that communities of color and low-income communities may not care as much about climate and environment because it may not feel as front-and-center as other issues". Celebrity attendees will include Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore and Richard Branson.

"I've seen firsthand the impacts of climate change to not only the Gulf of Maine, but also to our evolving fisheries, and to the coastal communities that depend upon them", said lobsterman Richard Nelson, of Friendship, Maine.

"I think the whole point of the march is to influence political will", said Masada Disenhouse, co-founder of the climate change group SanDiego350 and a lead organizer with the march.
