Hot Switch sales boost Nintendo sales, trim quarterly loss

Nintendo's current plans call for another 10 million Switch to be shipped in the next 12 months, which would nearly bring it to the entire lifetime sales of the Wii U - which stands at 13.6 million. "I am just relieved that consumers seem to have accepted it", Nintendo Chief Executive Tatsumi Kimishima tells the Wall Street Journal.

The number of Nintendo Switch units shipped during its launch month has been revealed by Nintendo, with the company delivering a hugely impressive 2.74 million units to retailers. Contrast with the current fiscal year's operating profit of 29.4 billion yen. The earnings report also mentions annual 3DS sales, which jumped to 7.27 million units thanks to the Pokémon Sun and Moon release. That projected 65 billion yen figure might be higher still, but Nintendo plans to spend heavily on Switch promotion this year, Kimishima told the Journal. Using a tablet-focused VR headset called the Durovis Dive 7 he found that the Nintendo Switch actually fit just perfectly.

He's not one of Nintendo's more famous execs, but his influence on the company has been huge. The game has sold 3.84 million units total worldwide, with 2.76 million of them on the Switch and the remaining 1.08 million on the Wii U.

As announced in the European Nintendo Direct, Dr. Kawashima's Devilish Brain Training is finally listed with a release date (28 July) for the region.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also gets the spotlight, with 2.76 million units of the Switch version selling worldwide.

By launching earlier in the year, though, Nintendo could be positioning itself for even stronger holiday sales.

"We will maintain favourable conditions surrounding Nintendo Switch by providing a continuous stream of appealing third-party titles across varying genres", the report states. Despite these prospects, some analysts believe that the Nintendo Switch will face strong long-term sales. Downloads for Fire Emblem were less than one-tenth of that figure, but Fire Emblem earned more than Mario through in-game purchases.

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has explained in a new interview the company hopes its Nintendo NX console is a bigger hit.

On the flipside, even after the fact that the Nintendo 3DS already had a good run and with its sales slightly plummeting due to the Switch's release, the fact that there are tons of games available for it can't be denied.

But Nintendo's profit estimate of 65bn yen ($583.9m; £453m) for the year to March 2018 was below market forecasts.
