600-year-old tree cut down in New Jersey

The two to three days of chopping and pulling will draw attention from residents of a bedroom community about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of NY and other tree fans who see it as a chance to bid a final farewell to their close friend.

Basking Ridge, New Jersey bid farewell to the 600-year-old tree on Monday due to its old age, according to local media reports.

George Washington once picnicked underneath the iconic great white oak tree, believed to have been one of the oldest in the nation.

Crews are due at a church this week to remove the beloved tree, which was declared dead last summer.

Workers have begun the process of cutting the tree down.

General George Washington is then believed to have eaten a picnic under the tree with his friend, the Marquis de Lafayette, some decades later.

The community is finding solace in the fact that the tree's legacy will live on because another white oak was planted using acorns from the old tree was planted elsewhere on the church's property.

Arborists say the tree existed for 300 years before the church was built in 1717. Arborists determined it wouldn't be able to withstand many more harsh winters or spring storms. It stands about 100 feet tall, has a trunk circumference of 18 feet and has a branch spread of roughly 150 feet.

But the tree was determined to have died a year ago, leaving church officials to decide it had to be cut down.

Even though the town has known for many months the tree would soon be gone, that doesn't make its coming absence any easier, Malay observed.

"It'll be an empty feeling, very different", said Jann Slapin of Basking Ridge, who has been a member of the church for 28 years and arrived at 8 a.m.to witness the cutting off of the first branch. Hundreds of people came by throughout the day to say goodbye to the historic tree that has been the centerpiece of the community for centuries.

NJ.com reports that the younger tree was moved Tuesday to the grounds of a Bernards church to replace its so-called father tree.

The old oak will be replaced by an offspring that has already grown to 25 feet tall.
