10 best tributes on 'Jackie Robinson Day'

The first statue in Dodger Stadium history belongs to Jackie Robinson.

Washington Nationals' manager Dusty Baker was born on June 15, 1949, two years and two months after the day Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier by becoming the first African-American to play in a Major League Baseball game on April 15, 1947. MVP awards, All-Star selections and championships recognized his skills as a player.

70 years ago tomorrow the world of baseball changed forever.

"Jackie had made us interested in baseball". I've had the good fortune of playing with players from more than 10 countries throughout my career.

I go back now to photos of Robinson, on that day in Cincinnati in the autumn of 1972. Soon, most of the teams around the game had integrated, realizing that they were only hurting themselves by ignoring such talented players.

According to a Dodgers press release, the statue will be located in the Left Field Reserve Plaza, which is already among the highest-traveled areas of the ballpark. It weights 700 pounds and is secured with a 150-pound steel rod.

In 2004, the Major League Baseball chose to honor Robinson's memory by celebrating Jackie Robinson Day.

Rachel Robinson, Jackie's widow and wife of 26 years, is said to be making the trek for the statue's reveal.

"They really wanted me to get the likeness and I assured them I'd be working very hard on that", he said.

"My dad was a humble person", Sharon said. I get to wear a pair of custom Jackie Robinson cleats by New Balance. Robinson opened the door for other African Americans to play Major League Baseball and was a key civil rights advocate off the diamond. Jackie Robinson's contributions both to the game and society will not be forgotten. "Jackie Robinson showed us you can stand up, be strong and be respected, and play great ball under tremendous pressure".
