'Political Bull': Justice vetoes $4.1 billion state budget

KENNY KEMP | Gazette Mail

After the state legislature presented West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice its proposed budget, he chose to show, rather than tell, everyone how he felt about it.

The Democratic governor publicly presented a tray of actual bull manure Thursday in the state capitol as he announced his veto of a Republican-backed budget package - leaving no doubt what he thinks of it.

"We don't have a nothing burger today, and we don't have a mayonnaise sandwich", Justice said. "What we have is nothing more than bunch of political bull you-know-what".

"And for that very reason, I'm signing my veto on the budget bill", he added, as the crowd applauded and politely chuckled.

"The unfortunate effect of this bill is that it weakens existing professional safeguards governing the medical knowledge and skills of physician assistants that have been serving the public interest for years", Justice said.

"We don't have a mayonnaise sandwich before us today", Justice said as the second lid was lifted showing a mayonnaise sandwich.

"I hope and pray that the silliness will stop", he said. It also takes $90 million from the state's Economic Stabilization Fund, better known as the Rainy Day Fund.

The veto means the Legislature will have to be called into special session to pass a budget.

The governor's original budget proposal $4.5 billion and included higher spending and increased taxes and fees.

The budget itself had been approved last weekend by the Republican-controlled Legislature.

Tim Armstead, West Virginia's Republican House speaker, slammed Justice's publicity stunt as a low-rent display. "We lived up to this promise", Carmichael said.

"However, any compromise on this budget absolutely must include comprehensive tax reform", he said.
