'Piggy bank' turtle slips into coma after op to remove coins

Thailand Coin-eating turtle's condition 'very serious' after undergoing surgery

A sea turtle that swallowed almost a thousand coins died of blood poisoning on Tuesday inspite of an initial successful operation, said doctors.

The reptile - named Omsin, which means "piggy bank" in Thai - had eaten the cash thrown into her pool in Thailand's Chonburi province. Eventually, the money formed a weight that cracked Bank's shell. "She is my friend, teacher and patient", said Dr. Nantarika Chansue, a veterinarian surgeon who removed 11 pounds of coins from the turtle's stomach on March 6, according to the Daily Mail.

The 25-year-old sea turtle fell into a coma after a second operation on Sunday, following intestinal problems.

"Bank!" she wrote on her Facebook page, where she also posted photos and videos of the turtle's last days and hours. She was about 25 years old.

Piggy Bank was brought to the vets by the navy, which found her in a distressed state in her seaside hometown.

An officer shows the coins the turtle ate over many years. Omsin lived for two decades in the pond, with visitors tossing coins into the water, seeking to "make merit" or good luck.

However, Dr Achariya Sailasuta, a professor at the veterinary faculty at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University, has revealed that the swallowed coins had poisoned her.

"With metal toxicity from coins at 200 times higher than normal, toxemia, nutritional deficiency, immunodeficiency, and stress.she did not wake up", Chansue said.

Doctors removed the coins in a seven-hour-long operation and things seemed fine.

Chansue and Bank's numerous supporters hope her passing is a reminder to others to think twice about throwing change and other objects into the spaces where animals live.
