Billionaire banking boss David Rockefeller dies aged 101

David Rockefeller, the billionaire businessman and philanthropist who was the last in his generation of one of the country's most famously philanthropic families, died Monday.

Rockefeller died in his sleep at home in Pocantico Hills, New York, on Monday morning as a result of congestive heart failure, said a statement from the The Rockefeller Foundation.

He also headed what is now JP Morgan Chase (JPM) in the 1970s, expanding the bank's reach internationally. David also generously donated to the NY institutions his family had a role in establishing, among them the Museum of Modern Art and the research institution Rockefeller University, reports Bloomberg.

Rockefeller was the sixth child of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and the grandson of Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller.

Rockefeller became embroiled in an global incident when in 1979 he and long-time friend Henry Kissinger helped persuade President Jimmy Carter to admit the shah of Iran to the United States for treatment of lymphoma, helping precipitate the Iran hostage crisis.

According to Forbes, David Rockefeller was worth $3.3 billion at the time of his death, making him the world's oldest billionaire. "Today it is part of JPMorgan Chase & Co".

He was one of five Rockefeller brothers and the last surviving sibling. On the occasion of his 100th birthday in 2015, the BBC reports, he donated 1,000 acres of land to the state of Maine. According to Reuters, Rockefeller gave away almost $2 billion in his lifetime.

Rockefeller collected beetles as a lifelong hobby and also acquired art - a Mark Rothko painting he bought in 1960 for less than $10,000 was auctioned for more than $72 million in May 2007.

As much as he gave, Rockefeller had almost the same propensity for collecting.

Still, his longest-running collection was significantly less ostentatious: his beetle collection.

"It's nice to live well and eat well and own things, but there comes a time, if you have enough money, when you just can't enjoy them all", Rockefeller told NPR in 2002.
