Sturgeon: May's Stance on 2nd Scottish Independence Vote Unsustainable

During a Private Notice Question in the House of Lords on Tuesday, following Nicola Sturgeon's request for a second Scottish Independence Referendum, I called on Her Majesty's Government to rule out both a second referendum on Scottish Independence and a border poll in Northern Ireland.

While First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has outlined plans to stage a fresh vote on independence between autumn 2018 and spring 2019, Mrs May intervened on Thursday to say "now is not the time" for such a ballot. The only other way the reserved matters in the Scotland Act can be amended would be through an Act of the UK Parliament.

Brexit Secretary David Davis said: "By the end of the month, we will invoke Article 50, allowing us to start our negotiations to build a positive new partnership with our friends and neighbors in the European Union, as well as taking a step out into the world as a truly global Britain".

We are proposing to give the people of Scotland a choice once Brexit is clear but before it is too late.

"So our plan for Britain will put strengthening and sustaining that Union at its heart".

Mr Brown, an architect of the 2014 "vow" promising Holyrood more powers in the event of a No vote to independence, has already pledged to join forces with Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale to campaign for a People's Constitutional Convention to look at how power is distributed across the nations and regions of the UK.

And then she dropped the proverbial mic, responding to a tweet by a fellow Scottish National Party member that read, "Just imagine Brussels had told the United Kingdom that they are not allowed to have a referendum". Britain's opposition party, Labour, meanwhile, was typically ambivalent (a cruel tongue might say disorganised) about Sturgeon's plans: while Scottish leader Kezia Dugdale called a proposed referendum divisive, United Kingdom party head Jeremy Corbyn declared he would "not block" legislation to hold a second vote in event it reached Westminster.

"We should be working together to get that right deal for Scotland, that right deal for the UK".

"But three years ago, they campaigned for a result that would have taken Scotland out of the European Union altogether". "It would simply not be fair".

"That means building a stronger economy and investing in the things that will deliver for Britain in the long-term, tackling the problem of low productivity and helping to secure the high-paid, high-skilled jobs of the future", she is expected to say.

Mr Swinney said the spring conference, which will be attended by 2,500 delegates, would "underline our party's top priorities of education, the economy and our public services".

Sturgeon's spokesperson later hinted they would accept a referendum held by 2021 - but only after the Scottish leader had called May's comment "a democratic outrage".

"However, that may now change in light of the UK Government's position. Theresa May would be ill-advised to stand in the way".
