A Look At The History Behind Presidents Day

In 2012, one website, Geometrx, went to the trouble of looking at the official holiday calendars for all 50 states, in a quest to see who actually calls the holiday "Presidents' Day", or "President's Day", or "Presidents Day".

This means that on Monday a slew of stores, malls, banks, post offices, stock markets, and more are closed.

After that, three students from fifth grade through sophomore year of high school will deliver prize-winning speeches inspired by Lincoln at 2 p.m.in the Chicago Room North.

The Center for Legislative Archives explains that George Washington's birthday is celebrated as a federal holiday on the third Monday in February. Others are trying to make You're Fired- Trump's catchphrase from The Apprentice- trend.

Washington's birthday became a federal holiday in 1885.

While Washington's birthday was celebrated on February 22nd until the 20th Century, Congressional leaders moved to a pass the Monday Holiday Law in 1968 to "provide uniform annual observances of certain legal public holidays on Mondays".

General George Washington (1732 - 1799) stands in the prow of a rowing boat crossing the DE to seek safety in Pennysylvania after defeat by the British. It's a federal holiday, so many institutions, venues, and services are closed for the day.

"What if we don't want to celebrate all presidents?" Around half the states have state holidays honoring both Lincoln and Washington today.

Here are a few tidbits to share with your children this Presidents' Day. Here's a brief guide to navigate this federal holiday without wasting too much time heading to locations that are closed.

But dozens of states celebrate the presidential legacy, or the hope of getting a really great deal on a vehicle, on the same day. It's used to honor all of our presidents past and present. Even Hallmark doesn't have a line of Presidents Day greeting cards. Wouldn't a single Presidents Day, on an agreed upon date, be enough?
