Trump Blasts 'Professional Anarchists' After Violent University Protests

Last March, he grilled the Obama Administration's spokesman about free speech and censorship on social media, not long after he was banned from Twitter for cyberbullying actress Leslie Jones.

Milo Yiannopoulos, an editor at Breitbart News, was escorted by police from the campus as a relatively small group among the 1500 protesters smashed windows and set fires and the campus was put on lockdown.

Berkeley University said it did not endorse his ideas but was committed to free speech and rejected calls to cancel the event, which was sponsored by the campus Republican club.

Yiannopoulos was scheduled to give that speech Wednesday at U.C. Berkeley, but protests turned violent before the event, forcing officials to cancel it.

'I am saddened but not surprised by the president's tweet, ' says Ronald Cohen, an atmospheric chemist who directs the university's atmospheric science centre.

Berkeley has almost 40,000 students.

It was not immediately clear what action Trump could take without authorization from Congress, or without risking legal action. As he imagines it, the outspoken and outrageous Milo-who has successfully been doing these events for the last 12 months at universities throughout the land-rashly chose to take a page from the leftwing playbook and rent-a-few-hundred thugs to riot and close down the last speech on his tour at the one place it would have had special meaning. "And I've heard - again, I don't want to say factually, but I've heard there was some relationship here between these people and the right wing and the right-wing movement that is affiliated with Breitbart News".

Trump threatened to cut funds for the university's flagship Berkeley campus in a Twitter posting accusing the institution of failing to support free speech and practicing violence against innocent people. The UC Davis event was also canceled amid protests.

"Of paramount importance was the campus's commitment to ensure the safety and security of those attending the event, the speaker, those who came to engage in lawful protest and members of the public and the Berkeley campus community", they said in a statement Wednesday.

It doesn't get more absurd than Robert Reich's claims that Milo Yiannopolous and his bawdy band of rightwingers were behind the Berkeley riots.

Speaking as one Berkeley alumnus and on behalf of no one else, I denounce the destruction of both public and private property and the harm against people with whom you disagree. The disturbance was organized by the self-described NYU Anti-Fascists group, which, in a Facebook post, encouraged protesters to stand up against "bigotry, racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny on our campus".
