Democratic Senator Who Criticized Betsy DeVos for Plagiarism Plagiarized Question to Her

Trump education nominee opposed by special ed advocatesMore

Susan Collins of ME was the first to announce on the Senate floor that she would vote against DeVos, making her the first Republican to oppose one of President Trump's cabinet nominees. Sen.

"I will not - I can not vote to confirm her as our nation's next secretary of education", Sen.

Collins cited her "lack of experience with public schools" in a speech Wednesday on the Senate floor. Susan Collins said Wednesday that she'll oppose Betsy DeVos' nomination, withholding a crucial Republican vote for her confirmation.

Republicans have a two-seat edge in the Senate, so DeVos could lose two senators and still get confirmed in a tie-breaking vote cast by Vice President Mike Pence.

DeVos cleared the Senate's education committee in a 12-11 party-line vote on Tuesday, with Collins joining fellow Republicans to advance the nomination, but warning that DeVos wasn't assured her vote. The paper reported that 49 of the Senate's 52 Republicans voted for each of Trump's nominees so far.

"I have 100 percent confidence that she will be the next secretary of education", Spicer said at a daily White House press briefing. Despite this, Trump announced on November 23 that Betsy DeVos would be his choice for Secretary of Education.

DeVos is a GOP billionare donor who has zero education policy experience, thinks guns may be required in schools to fight "the grizzlies", and is a school voucher fanatic who critics fear will privatize public education. Sen.

GOP aides told Politico they expect all other Republicans to also stand behind the nominee, allowing her to squeak by her Senate confirmation. The loss of the Murkowski and Collins votes meant DeVos might have only been able to garner 49 votes, meaning her nomination would have fallen, 49-50.

She finished her floor statement with her intention to vote against DeVos. Simply put, Mrs. Devos' ideology and her weak grasp of the issues under the purview of the Department of Education would hurt the students who are struggling the most.

Their willingness to buck the GOP alliance behind DeVos, a MI billionaire and major political donor, reflects the mounting public outrage over her selection by Donald Trump. She has advocated for the use of taxpayer funds to send students to private and religious schools.

Collins called it a "very hard decision", but repeated that she was "troubled and surprised" by DeVos's apparent lack of familiarity with federal law related to students with disabilities.

"I simply can not support her confirmation", Collins said during remarks on the Senate floor.
