Storms bring flooding to drought-parched Alabama

More than 20 tornadoes were reported as a powerful storm system moved through the southeast.

In Tennessee, meteorologists confirmed three tornadoes on Wednesday that killed two people and injured dozens, the weather service said.

Hundreds of trees were downed in Coffee County, halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga, and at least five homes were damaged. Another person in the home was critically injured, Harnen said.

There have been 25 others from the area transported to the hospital with minor injuries from the storm, reports WRCB.

At least four people have died in wildfires around Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

In Marshall County, the EF-1 tornado left a 1.2 mile trail of damage in Union Grove.

He said some major roof damage was reported to homes, but so far that appeared to be the worst of the damage. Between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, a total of 12 tornados were confirmed in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. An active tornado warning was posted for northeastern Alabama counties of Marshall, Cullman and Morgan, which are located between the cities of Huntsville and Birmingham.

Atlanta Fire Rescue said there were reports of a tornado touchdown in Cobb County, including Atlanta, while another tornado was reported in Temple, Georgia.

In southern Tennessee, an apparent tornado also was responsible for the death of a couple in Polk County, while an unknown number of others were injured, said Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Flener. The Ider tornado was assigned a preliminary rating of EF3 by a survey team from the National Weather Service.

Recovery efforts are underway after severe storms killed three people and injured several others - including four children - in Alabama.

In Winston County, Sheriff Jason Pugh says he and his deputies were helping those with damaged homes find a place to stay. Hail, including hailstones as large as a baseball, was also reported.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Bryant said observers reported baseball- and golf ball-sized hail hitting central and north MS as several powerful storms moved across the state.
