Three California mosques receive hateful letters mentioning Trump

Hussam Ayloush

Local Islamic leaders are asking for increased police protection after at least three California mosques received a letter that threatens Muslims in the latest of a string of similar incidents reported since the Nov.8 election.

The letter was sent to the Islamic Center of Long Beach in Signal Hill, California, the Islamic Center of Claremont in Pomona, California and to the Evergreen Islamic Center in San Jose, California.

According to CAIR the letter was addressed to the "Children of Satan".

It went on to say "There's a new sheriff in town, President Donald Trump". It said that President-elect Donald Trump will do to Muslims "what Hitler did to the jews [sic]. And, he's going to start with you Muslims". The incoming POTUS promised at one point in the campaign to create a Muslim ban if he were to be elected, preventing any Muslims from entering the country. He said that once they learned that the report of the letter sent to the mosque in San Jose had been covered by several media outlets, CAIR decided they might as well alert people to the incidents. According to the Orange County Register, there have been more than 100 documented anti-Muslim incidents in the United States since election day.

Zahra Billoo, who serves as executive director of the Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and who posted the letter to Twitter, tells the Chronicle she's glad the letter was "just words" and not anything worse. After the election, California Attorney General and incoming U.S. Senator Kamala Harris sent a bulletin to police agencies outlining laws surrounding hate crimes because of the statewide uptick.

Additionally, newly-released Federal Bureau of Investigation hate crime statistics show a 67 percent jump in anti-Muslim incidents in 2015, the statement highlighted.

University of Washington police are looking for a man they say threw a glass bottle at a student on campus earlier this month, an incident the Council on American-Islamic Relations Washington (CAIR-WA) suspects was motived by her Muslim faith.
