Dueling protests as Brexit battle goes to UK's High Court

Theresa May 'doesn't have legal power to trigger Brexit'

"Are we now saying that we can go back to 19th-century, 18th-century politics where governments can overrule parliaments and take away people's rights, which will happen when we leave the EU".

Miller is leading a group of campaigners who are contesting the government's authority to proceed with Brexit without asking Parliament, arguing the principle of parliamentary sovereignty underpins the constitution and the rule of law in the country, the BBC reports.

Only 1 percent of worldwide students break the terms of their visa by refusing to leave after their course ends, a government study has found.

Despite calls from some MPs - most of whom were opposed to leaving the European Union - for Parliament to seek to block Brexit or force the British people to vote again, campaign group People's Pledge said yesterday that new research indicated most would vote in favour of triggering Article 50, which formally begins the process of leaving, if given a vote.

"We have a functioning democracy", Miller said to Sky News.

"This suggests there will be heightened uncertainty around the pound", said a spot trader at an European bank, adding that the spectre of a "hard Brexit" - where Britain leaves the EU's single market - was likely to see sterling weaken further. The hearing comes amid wider calls for lawmakers to have a vote over the details of Brexit negotiations.

However she came under pressure from Jeremy Corbyn, who said the Prime Minister was pursuing a "shambolic Tory Brexit" to appease her backbenchers as Labour posed the Government 170 questions on Brexit - one for every day until Mrs May's deadline for triggering Article 50.

Once May activates the exit clause - Article 50 in the EU's governing Lisbon Treaty - negotiations on the terms of Britain's departure would run for two years.

Challenged at Prime Minister's Questions, Mrs May insisted suggestions that Parliament would be unable to debate issues around Brexit were "completely wrong".

"[A government] that has no strategy for negotiating Brexit and offers no clarity, no transparency and no chance of scrutiny of the process for developing a strategy".

The majority of MPs campaigned to stay in the European Union and they could vote to block the very start of the process which the majority of constituents backed.

"This is not about whether we should stay or leave - this is actually about how we leave", Miller told AFP on Wednesday.

Commenting for Open Britain, Labour MP Phil Wilson said: "The Government's negotiating hand would be strengthened if they had clear plans backed by a strong parliamentary mandate".
