Turkey to Participate in Liberation of Iraq's Mosul From Daesh - Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi should "know his place" and added that a Turkish Army contingent in Iraq will not take orders from Baghdad.

The fight against terrorists in Mosul, Iraq, will involve Turkey's military, that country's leader said Tuesday. The Iraqi government requests came during the term of former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

He said the Turkish forces will do what is necessary in Mosul. "You are not my interlocutor, you are not at my level", Erdogan told a meeting in Istanbul, in comments addressed to Abadi.

Turkey says it wants to be a part of the liberation of Mosul, which United States and Iraqi authorities say is imminent. Turkey is training anti-IS fighters to help retake Mosul from the extremist group.

A U.S. defense official told CNN that 1,000 Turkish soldiers are stationed in Bashiqa in Nineveh province, northeast of the ISIS held-city of Mosul, the terror group's most important bastion in Iraq.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Turkey shares a 1,200 km border with Syria and Iraq and faces threats from ISIS armed extremists in both.

The troops are in northern Iraq under an agreement with the Kurdish Regional Government, which has close economic and political ties with Ankara, but Baghdad is opposed to their presence.

The tension between the two neighbors escalated when the Turkish Parliament agreed to extend the military's mandate in northern Iraq.

Iraq has called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council to discuss the dispute, which threatens to complicate plans to recapture Mosul from IS.

The battle for Mosul could start as soon as this month with backing from the USA -led coalition forces.

Erdogan also said Turkey wouldn't withdraw its troops from the base in Bashiqa, adding that it was al-Abadi himself who had asked Ankara to train fighters there back in 2014.

"If you try to change the demographic structure in Mosul, you will ignite the fire for a major sectarian war", Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told members of his ruling AK Party at a meeting in parliament.
