Saudis to investigate Yemen airstrike that hit packed funeral home

The Yemeni people at the funeral ceremony were bombed by American weapons delivered to the "aggressive Saudi army", Shamkhani said in a statement, stressing that the an "accomplice" in the crime and should be held accountable for it.

People inspect the aftermath of a Saudi-led coalition airstrike in Sanaa, Yemen, on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016. The coalition supports former President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who was housted by the Iran-backed Houthis in March 2015.

The Saudi-led coalition has pledged to "immediately investigate this case along with the Joint Incidents Assessment Team in Yemen and experts from the United States who participated in previous investigations".

In September 2015, a suspected coalition air strike killed at least 131 civilians at a wedding near the Red Sea city of Mokha.

A recent report found that coalition air strikes were responsible for some 60 per cent of civilian casualties in Yemen's war, amounting to nearly 3,800 deaths since they began in March a year ago.

Britain is among Saudi Arabia's foremost global allies and, despite ever mounting concerns among relief groups, continues to support its bombing campaign against the Houthis with arms exports and military training.

And on Saturday, Price said the administration was "deeply disturbed" by reports of the airstrikes on the funeral hall and referred to a "troubling series of attacks striking Yemeni civilians".

"We have initiated an immediate review of our already significantly reduced support to the Saudi-led coalition and are prepared to adjust our support so as to better align with USA principles, values and interests, including achieving an immediate and durable end to Yemen's tragic conflict", the statement said.

The attack targeted the funeral of the father of Houthi Interior Minister Galal al-Rawishan in capital Sanaa on Saturday evening. Among those killed was Maj.

Among those killed was Major General Abdul-Qader Hilal, head of the capital's local council, according to the officials.

The Saudi-led coalition called the bombing "regrettable and painful" in a statement, but did not directly accept responsibility for the attack. He also reminded all parties to abide by their obligations under worldwide humanitarian law - including the fundamental rules of proportionality, distinction and precaution - to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure against attack.

The Saudi-led coalition has come under increasing global scrutiny over civilian deaths.

Jamie McGoldrick, the United Nations humanitarian co-ordinator in Yemen, said in a statement that the relief community in the country is "shocked and outraged" by the air strikes.

"Those responsible for the attack must be brought to justice", he added.

Over 10,000 people have been killed and three million displaced since the start of the conflict. Just under one-quarter - 475 - civilian deaths were attributed to rebel forces like those loyal to President Saleh, and another 113 to affiliates of al Qaida and the Islamic State group.
