5 teenagers killed by wrong-way driver in Vermont, police say

Police say five people died in the first crash.

Soon after the initial reports were filed, that truck crashed into a small sedan in Williston, police said.

Rex says the deaths were "an unprecedented tragedy" and that all were vibrant members of the community with bright futures. As a Williston police officer pulled a female victim from the wrecked vehicle and tried to extinguish the fire, police said, the suspect - identified as Steven Bourgoin, 36 - entered the officer's cruiser and fled southbound.

Five people were killed after a wrong-way driver caused several crashes on Interstate 89 early Sunday morning in Williston, said Vermont State Police Capt. Mike Henry.

The high school opened Sunday and will be open Monday for anyone wanting to meet with a crisis team. When Richmond police attempted to intercept him, the suspect made a U-turn and again headed north in southbound lanes.

The Harwood Union faculty and staff and coaches will be meeting on Monday afternoon to plan the opening school and how to best support our students in the upcoming days.

Henry said while a Williston officer was tending to one of the victims and trying to put out the fire, the officer looked up to see a man stealing the officer's police cruiser and speeding off.

Henry could not immediately say if Bourgoin was under the influence of alcohol or drugs because the investigation was still ongoing and because Bourgoin needed hospitalization.

Bourgoin, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital. "The Williston Fire Department would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those lost in this tragic event".

Henry said he expects the roadway to remain shut for up to six hours while reconstruction workers investigate the crash.

The state police sent out an alert via email at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday saying the southbound lanes were close, then amended the alert with another email about 15 minutes later adding the northbound lanes to the closure.
